Park was inaugurated the first waves of the world. This is the Park of waves of Avarua, Parish of Povoa de Varzim. This technology makes use of wave energy. The Enersis Group, a technology partner with Scottish Power Ocean Energy, are the pioneers in this technology.
Waves of energy - 750 pelamis
The pelamis is a semi-submerged structure composed of cylindrical sections, joined by articulated joints which is a module for the conversion of energy. The structure pelamis has three modules for conversion of energy (3 x 250 kW). Each module provides a system regardless of converting wave energy into electricity. Each module measures 50 meters long and 3.5 meters in diameter, getting off the line only 1 meter of water.
The Park of waves of Agudaçoura is installed to 5 kilometers from the coast off the Povoa de Varzim.
The energy produced by waves in high seas, are more stable than the wave of surf. The park is linked to waves through submarine cables to a substation for interconnection with the electricity grid.
The Enersis invested an initial value of 8.5 million euros in the project. The Park of waves of Barberton will initially produce electricity that could supply a village of 6,000 inhabitants. Over the next few years, the Enersis provides install 20 megawatts (MW), which results in an investment of 70 million.
Portugal is thus a pioneer in this type of system, just like Denmark and Germany dominate the market for Wind Energy. Has great importance in the economic leadership since taking the power of technology will be ahead in this market, installing new wave of parks in Portugal and left for the world market.
